Tech Accelerator Promotes Inclusivity for Startups in Washington and Oregon

A new tech accelerator is seeking to bolster entrepreneurship among underrepresented groups in Washington and Oregon by launching a virtual program. This initiative, funded by the U.S. Economic Development Administration, aims to provide opportunities for underserved women, BIPOC founders, and rural-based startups.

Virtual Program Offers Free Support

The tech accelerator, developed as a nonprofit effort, is opening its doors to 50 applicants for its inaugural 10-week virtual program. The deadline for applications is March 14, and the program will focus on various tech disciplines. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to encourage participation from underrepresented groups in the tech industry, with a specific emphasis on inclusivity and diversity.

By offering a no-cost program, the accelerator aims to reduce barriers to entry for startups that might otherwise struggle to gain a foothold. The program is designed to be accessible to participants regardless of their geographic location, particularly targeting those in rural areas who might not have easy access to similar resources. The program director, Devon Horace, is at the helm of this initiative, guiding the strategy and execution of the accelerator’s goals.

Focus on AI and Climate Technology

Participants in the accelerator will gain exposure to a range of technological fields, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence and climate tech. This focus aligns with the growing importance of technology in addressing global challenges such as climate change. The accelerator is also introducing a new 'Discover' track specifically designed for early-stage startups. This track includes a six-month mentorship program to help nascent companies develop their ideas and business models.

In addition to AI and climate tech, the accelerator is placing a significant emphasis on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The 'Deploy' track is available for more mature companies ready to conduct 12-week proofs of concept. This dual-track approach ensures that startups at different stages of development can benefit from tailored support and resources.

Previous Success and Broader Reach

The accelerator is not an isolated effort; it is part of a larger network that has served 52 communities since 2014. Known as RAIN, this network has demonstrated a commitment to fostering entrepreneurship across diverse regions and demographics. The accelerator's programs have also attracted international interest, with startups from 11 countries participating in various initiatives over the years.

Alongside the primary program, a new accelerator in Seattle is being launched specifically for tech startups. This program will focus on sustainable aviation fuel and other tech innovations that can contribute to environmental sustainability. By supporting these efforts, the accelerator seeks to create a community of tech innovators who are well-equipped to tackle contemporary challenges.

Community Building and Networking Opportunities

Beyond the technical and business support, the accelerator places a strong emphasis on community building among founders. Participants will have access to resources and mentorship, as well as numerous networking opportunities to connect with industry leaders and potential partners. The program duration is set at four months, running from this month through February, providing ample time for startups to develop their ideas and expand their networks.
