AcceleratorCON Promotes Diversity in Entrepreneurship

AcceleratorCON, founded by Esosa Johnson, held its inaugural event on September 29, 2023, at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York. The conference aims to disrupt system-level biases in the realm of entrepreneurship, with a focus on supporting Black women. What started as a modest 40-person meeting has rapidly expanded into a global event, marking its place as the largest gathering of Black women tech entrepreneurs.

Addressing System-Level Biases

AcceleratorCON's mission is to identify and mitigate the systemic biases that often hinder underrepresented groups in the entrepreneurial landscape. The event brings together a variety of resources, including accelerators, incubators, and startup programs, to address challenges faced by startups and accelerators alike. By fostering a community of diverse backgrounds, AcceleratorCON aims to create a more equitable environment for innovation and business growth.

"Our goal is to dismantle the barriers that have historically limited opportunities for Black women in the tech industry," said a spokesperson from AcceleratorCON.

The conference's holistic approach incorporates coworking spaces, incubators, and accelerators, providing strategic guidance and mentorship to budding entrepreneurs. This comprehensive support system is designed to empower founders to navigate the complexities of starting and maintaining a successful business.

Interactive Expo and Networking Opportunities

The event was held in a 50,000 square foot venue, featuring an expo hall known as 'Accelerator Alley', where exhibitors showcased their programs and initiatives. Attendees had access to an Interview Hub, facilitating direct interactions between startups and program directors. Additionally, a Knowledge Stage hosted keynotes and panel discussions on relevant industry topics.

Participants also had the opportunity to record 60-second pitch videos, allowing them to present their business ideas concisely to potential investors and collaborators. This feature was particularly beneficial for startups seeking to enhance their visibility and garner support from the entrepreneurial community.

Empowering Startups through Education and Mentorship

Central to AcceleratorCON's offerings are cohort-based programs that provide coaching and education. These programs grant startups access to faculty and business experts, facilitating opportunities for hackathons and innovation sprints. The Cultivator program, a key component of AcceleratorCON, aids startups in customer discovery and product development. Startups that go through accelerators typically raise 50-170% more capital and are more likely to survive or be acquired compared to those that do not participate in such programs.

With over 3,200 accelerator programs listed on Crunchbase, these platforms play a crucial role in leveling the playing field for minority entrepreneurs. Communities like Buffalo offer valuable resources for startups, where a collaborative community of founders can share ideas and experiences, further enhancing their chances of success.
